Plastic pipes - Designs and applications

Solid wall pipes
  • The solid wall pipe is the traditional design.
  • They are used in many ways especially as pressurised water pipes and gas pipes. The thickness of the solid pipe wall is critical for pressure resistance

.

Pipes with structured walls

  • These lightweight pipes do not have great internal pressure resistance.
  • They have advantages if ring stiffness or vertex pressure resistance is important, e.g. when laid underground.
  • Less material used to manufacture the pipes

.

The most important designs:

  • Foam core pipes where the centre layer of the pipe wall has a foam structure,
    • normally used today for KG sewer pipes.
  • Single layer corrugated pipes with great flexibility. Used mainly as:
    • Electrical installation pipes.
    • Agricultural drainage pipes,
    • Cable protection pipes in automobile construction.
    • Cable protection pipes in the domestic appliance industry etc

  • Double wall corrugated pipes with smooth inner layer:
    • Stiffening the corrugated structure mainly in an axial direction,
    • Good hydraulic properties (water drainage capacity),
    • Mainly used:
      • For drainage during street building,
      • For cable protection pipes for cables laid underground,
      • As sewer pipes,
      • For rain water management
